Harris and Me Chapters 5-8
Chapters 5-8 : Harris shows the narrator the carved figures that Louie makes and the coats he makes for them out of mice’s skin. Harris believes everything is real, so he too can be Tarzan. The "Tarzan Leap" from the granary is a disaster because of the rooster, momentum, and pigs. The boys play "Red Indians" -lurking and shooting things, including Buzzer, with homemade bows and arrows. A trip to town is a big event with a never-ending reel of Gene Autry and orange pop for the kids, and music and drinking for the adults. Now Harris is Gene, saving rustlers by jumping onto Bill’s back; Bill reacts by kicking the "bejesus" out of him. Another "cinematic event" consists of riding Bob and shootings Knute’s shotgun. The boys end up on the ground, with the gun in two pieces, for which Harris persuades the boy to take the blame.

Assignment: Favorite Part of Chapters 1 -4
Harris and Gary find themselves in trouble often. What is your favorite scene from chapters 1 - 4? Why?
Harris and Me Chapter Summaries
Chapters 1 - 4 (already read) The narrator's parents drink too much, so he's rotated out to different relatives. The summer he's eleven, a deputy takes him way out to the Larson place - home of Knute, Clair, fourteen-year-old Glennis, and nine-year-old Harris. Harris is always swearing, and Glennis is always whacking him for it. The next morning, the boy meets Louie, a filthy ranch hand, and the fastest eater the boy has ever seen. He goes to the barn where Vivian, a cow, knocks him out with a kick. Later, the boys are attacked by Ernie, a vicious rooster. Harris tricks the boy into separating the milk from the cream, a tiring process. Lunch is followed by hitching up huge horses, Bill and Bob to go mowing. Buzzer, Louie's large cat comes along. They catch mice to give to Louie, but the boy has to share his with Buzzer. And that is just the narrator's first day on the farm!
